“CO₂ is invisible, tasteless, and odorless, and that has helped keep the truth about its impact on our climate out of sight and out of mind. We often confuse the unprecedented with the improbable.”

Al Gore, Nobel Lecture, 2007

An incredibly simple way to get people on board with change and policy.

You know something isn't quite right.

You present the vision.
You explain the plan.
You send the memo.

So what?

Silence.
Resistance.
Or worse: feigned enthusiasm that fizzles out after two weeks.

It's not your fault, guys.

41% do not trust the organization enough to go along with it.

39% don't even understand why the change is necessary.

And 73%? That's simply gone.

Change fatigue.
Another reorganization.
Yet another new system.
Yet another presentation about the future.

And you expect them to go along with it enthusiastically?

Here lies the divide that no one dares to speak of openly:

74% of leaders say they engage their employees.
Yet only 42% of employees feel the same way.

That’s not a communication problem.
That’s an experience problem.

Change and Policy Simulation

New policies don't fail because of bad ideas. They fail because people can't see what's coming.

As long as change remains abstract, behavior stays the same. In organizations, we see the same reactions over and over again, and none of them stem from a lack of willingness.

Digging in one's heels
+
01 — Digging in the Sand

Resistance

Your team hears the plan. And does absolutely nothing.

It’s not that they’re unwilling. They just don’t see how it affects their work.

Abstract plans don’t get anyone excited. They make people cautious.

Lack of understanding
+
02 — INCOMPREHENSION

Distance

Roadmaps, strategy decks, policy documents.
Written for the boardroom. Unreadable for the front lines.

Your people need to drive the change. But they don’t even understand what that means in practice.

Fear
+
03 — FEAR

Paralysis

Fear of the unknown is human.
But fear without a sense of security is paralyzing.

It stops people from thinking. And makes them start avoiding things.

Let them experience the future with confidence—and fear turns into action.

Fake move
+
04 — FAKE MOVEMENTS

Paying lip service

Everyone nods in the meeting.
Nothing changes on Monday.

The most dangerous variant: invisible to management, deadly for any transition.

Only when people experience the consequences for themselves does “yes” truly mean “yes.”

Procrastination
+
05 — Procrastination

The Never-Ending Pilot Phase

“We’ll wait and see for now.”
Not actively opposed. But never in favor either.

Exploratory studies, pilot projects, working groups—while the world keeps moving forward.

Urgency doesn’t come from reports. It comes from experience.

But how, then, do employees learn about the future?

They learn by playing out the future.

Four years ago, we discovered a very simple solution.

Not another PowerPoint presentation.
Not another change plan.

But with images, videos, games, and activities, allowing teams to experience the future firsthand.

Safe. Together. With room to make mistakes.

Erasmus MC: Over 2,000 staff members on standby, available year-round

Client: Erasmus MC Rotterdam

The challenge

Sustainability in a hospital goes far beyond recycling. It touches on the future-readiness of healthcare in the broadest sense—from energy and procurement to culture and patient care. Erasmus MC wanted to do more than just inform: they wanted to truly inspire and motivate employees at every level and in every department. The challenge was to translate this complex, abstract theme into an experience that truly drives behavioral change.

Our Approach

We launched the Erasmus MC FutureGame: The Plastic Pandemic. This visual awareness game took all employees—from doctors to facilities staff—on a journey into the world of tomorrow. Through a mix of digital interaction and visual storytelling, teams discovered what’s possible in sustainable healthcare. Each session challenged participants to set a concrete goal and define the first step they could take the very next day. The game is permanently installed in a special room at the hospital.

The result

The FutureGame went live at Erasmus MC in November 2025 and is installed in a permanent space within the hospital. Every week, multiple teams play the experience, and sustainability has been brought to life for more than 2,000 employees. Eight new Green Teams have been formed as a direct result, ensuring that departments remain engaged long after their session. The game achieved a remarkable average score of 9.1 out of 10.

“We commissioned Helden Inc. to develop a FutureGame to raise awareness about sustainability—a playful way to draw attention to a serious issue. We clicked right from our very first meeting. Thanks to the smooth collaboration, and especially with Taam Maas, we now have a fantastic green escape room in our hospital. I highly recommend working with Helden Inc.”

The creative force behind our change and policy apps

Marieke - Escape Room Designer

Change only works when people feel it. Not when they read about it in a memo.

Andy built the digital tools that make this possible. At the heart of it all: the FutureGame. A game that lets your team literally look into the future. Together. Not behind a screen—but with one another.

He developed the framework from scratch, using the "future-back" technique as a foundation. He pulled all-nighters, scrapped versions, and started over.

But it's not about the technology.

Andy worked side by side with our trainers. Every interaction was tested. Every step was fine-tuned. So that the digital and physical experiences blend seamlessly.

The result? Apps that don’t meet with resistance to change. Instead, they inspire action.

Everything about Change and Policy

What exactly is the FutureGame?+
The FutureGame is an interactive serious game that lets you shape the future of your organization. Instead of passively listening to new plans, employees use scenario-based thinking to experiment with what tomorrow might hold. Through play and inspiration, teams discover what a new strategic direction, digital innovation, or cultural shift might look like.
What is the purpose of the FutureGame?+
Traditional approaches often remain abstract, which can lead to uncertainty in the workplace. The FutureGame transforms that uncertainty into ownership and enthusiasm by allowing participants to experience the future firsthand. Through concrete reflection and brainstorming exercises, teams reflect on their current actions and identify specific steps they can take to collectively achieve that desired future.
What topics is the FutureGame suitable for?+
The game is the perfect tool for any challenge that requires bridging the gap between strategy and the front lines. Examples include:
- Strategy activation
- Innovation & AI adoption
- Cultural change
How is the FutureGame played?+
We offer three formats:

Digital Only: Fully online for individual players or remote teams.
In-Person at the Office: For large groups divided into small teams, ideal for hybrid training days.
Immersive Experience: Our premium format, which can remain set up at your location for an extended period.
What data and insights does the game provide us with?+
The FutureGame isn’t just a fun and educational experience—it’s also a measurement tool. All of the players’ substantive answers, reflections, and innovative ideas are immediately stored in a database. As an organization, you’ll have access to your own admin dashboard where you can view and export all the data.
How much guidance is needed?+
The game is designed to be played completely independently and is plug-and-play. Thanks to the game’s digital controls and built-in hints, teams will always be able to progress. If desired, we can also provide live on-site support, for example during a large event or kick-off.
What are the costs and the development time?+
On average, developing a custom version takes 2 to 3 months, including a testing phase with your target audience. The game has a modular structure and can be endlessly customized to meet your needs. Contact us for a customized proposal.
